"Because of its excellent location, the town of Groningen is predestined to be a dwelling place for the Muses. She is pleasantly located, has a healthy air, a mild abundance of all kinds of food, many possibilities for suitable housing and other such like things."

The announcement of the opening of the University of Groningen in July 1614, written by Wiardus Meynardi and Ubbo Emmius.

Getting there

Using Public Transport in The Netherlands

During a short stay in the Netherlands the most convenient method for using public transport is to buy one way-tickets. For the trains these tickets are available in the vending machines on the railway stations. Bus tickets can be bought straight from the driver. In case of a longer stay, it can be more economical to buy a swipe card (the so-called “OV-chipcard”) – when you are using public transport more than seven times. You can purchase such a swipe card from the vending machines on the railway stations. They need to be charged in advance (again at the vending machine). You should 'check in' on every train, bus, tram or metro ride and ‘check out’ again when getting off.

Travelling from Schiphol Airport (Amsterdam) to Groningen

When you arrive to Amsterdam International Airport (Schiphol), the easiest way to travel to Groningen is by train. The underground train station is beneath the airport, within walking distance of the luggage claim areas. The Dutch railway system is run by Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS). You will recognize it by its yellow and blue colours. Just follow the yellow illuminated signs that direct you "To the trains".

Train Tickets

Online E-ticket: You can buy your ticket online and simply print it yourself. This allows you to take care of everything whenever and wherever it suits you. All you have to do is complete the journey details, pay for the order, download and print your e-ticket. You don't need to check-in or -out.

Ticket desk at the airport: The ticket desk is located in the main hall of Schiphol Airport. All cards are accepted.

Ticket-vending machine: You can find the yellow and blue ticket-vending machines in the luggage claim hall and at every entrance to the train terminal. You can purchase tickets from the machines only by using your Credit Card or a Debit Card with the Maestro logo. American Debit Cards will not be accepted.

If you use a single-use chipcard or OV-chipkaart please make sure you check in and out; hold your OV-chipkaart up against the NS card reader in one of the gates or free-standing posts.

Detailed information on schedules is available on the NS website
